Soft Plastics to Oil Recycling Solution

There are several key contamination issues challenging the recycling efforts by local council and residents due to soft plastic materials:


  • Plastic bags cannot be recycled through the kerbside recycling stream.

  • The need to keep recycling loose. Resident’s are continually educated and reminded to not place recyclables in plastic bags as it can prevent useful materials from being recycled.

  • Currently Australian recycling processors cannot process all soft plastics. These materials must be placed in the rubbish bin or taken to participating supermarkets.


Why does APR Kerbside want to keep soft plastics in the commingled stream?

As part of local kerbside recycling programs, residents were previously advised that: 


  • Recycling should be loose and plastic bag free.

  • Plastic bags and other soft plastics do NOT belong in yellow-lidded recycling bins.


This was correctly communicated, as when such material from kerbside recycling bins arrived on-site, this would cause major issues during the sorting process. The plastic material would get trapped in the machinery and there was no viable local end market that could re-purpose it. As a leader in the recycling industry, APR Kerbside strives to do things differently. APR Kerbside has been working hard behind the scenes to find an innovative solution to combat such issues.

When will the trial project commence?

​

The introduction of the proposed Biofrabrik WASTX technology at the APR Facility in Dandenong South will be in Mid-Late February 2022. The roll-out of the Soft Plastics to Oil project initiative is anticipated to deliver promising results.

Which soft plastic materials can be utilised for conversion to oil?

​

Resins 2,4 and 5 (HDPE, LDPE, Polypropylene).
